Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry
Egg Mixture
- 4 large eggs
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Toppings
- 1 ½ cups freshly grated cheese (Colby-Jack recommended)
- 2 to 4 slices cooked bacon, diced into ½ inch pieces
- Fresh chives, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Place the oven rack in the middle position and preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Thaw the puff pastry sheet according to the package directions. Once pliable, roll it out into a 10×10-inch square. Carefully transfer the rolled puff pastry onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Create Puff Pastry Border: Fold one edge of the puff pastry over ½ inch, and then fold it over again another ½ inch to create a tight border. Repeat this process with all four edges, ensuring the border is well defined and sturdy.
- Add Eggs and Brush Edges: Crack the eggs evenly over the puff pastry inside the border, spreading them out gently. Use a pastry brush dipped in the egg whites to brush the edges of the border thoroughly to help seal the corners.
- Season and Add Toppings: Season the eggs with salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the eggs, then distribute the diced cooked bacon over the cheese layer.
- Bake the Tart: Bake the tart in the preheated oven for approximately 18 minutes, or until the puff pastry edges are golden and fully puffed, and the eggs are cooked to your liking.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove the tart carefully from the oven. Sprinkle the chopped fresh chives over the top. Cut into squares and serve warm. Enjoy your delicious breakfast tart!
Notes
- You can substitute Colby-Jack cheese with cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite melting cheese.
- For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon or replace it with sautéed mushrooms or spinach.
- Make sure not to overfill the tart with eggs to prevent it from spilling out during baking.
- Use fresh eggs for the best texture and flavor.
- The puff pastry can be substituted with phyllo dough for a lighter texture, but adjust baking time accordingly.
- Chilling the puff pastry before baking can help achieve a flakier crust.
