Description

Gyeran Bap is a simple and flavorful Korean egg rice dish featuring fluffy cooked rice topped with a perfectly fried egg, sesame oil, soy sauce, and garnished with green onions, toasted sesame seeds, and optional nori strips. This quick and comforting meal is ready in just 10 minutes and is perfect for a satisfying breakfast or light meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Rice and Egg

  • 2 cups cooked white rice (preferably short-grain or medium-grain rice)
  • 2 large eggs

Seasonings and Garnishes

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon butter (optional, for added richness)
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 green onion, finely chopped
  • Nori (seaweed) strips, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice: Divide the cooked rice evenly into two serving bowls and keep warm to maintain the perfect temperature.
  2. Fry the Eggs: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add the sesame oil. Crack the eggs into the skillet, frying them until the whites are fully set but the yolks remain cooked to your liking; traditionally, sunny-side up is preferred for this dish.
  3. Assemble the Dish: Place one fried egg on top of each bowl of rice to begin building the layers of flavor.
  4. Add Seasoning: Drizzle soy sauce over the rice and egg, adjusting to taste. For extra richness, add a small pat of butter to each bowl if desired, allowing it to melt into the warm rice and egg.
  5. Garnish: Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds and finely chopped green onions on top. Optionally, add nori strips for added texture and an authentic touch.
  6. Serve: Before eating, mix the egg, soy sauce, and rice together well to combine all the flavors and enjoy the dish at its best.

Notes

  • Use freshly cooked and hot rice for the best texture and flavor.
  • Adjust soy sauce quantity according to your salt preference.
  • For a richer taste, the optional butter enhances creaminess but can be omitted for a lighter version.
  • Nori strips add a pleasant sea flavor and crunch but can be skipped if unavailable.
  • This dish is customizable: you can add chili flakes or kimchi on the side for heat and extra flavor.
